The Neuroscience of Silence
In 2013 a researching team at Duke University conducted a landmark study on how different auditory stimuli affect brain cell growth (Brain Structure and Function, 2013). They tested music, white noise, and animal calls, using quiet periods only as a baseline control.
The result was unexpected: 2 hours of genuine silence per day was the only condition that produced lasting new neuron growth in the hippocampus-the region of the brain responsible for memory formation, learning, and emotional regulation.
When external sound stops, the brain doesn't shut down. Instead, it turns inward, consolidating information and engaging internal cognitive networks that remain suppressed when constantly processing external noise.
Why We Are Struggling Universally

2 decades of longitudinal research led by the University of California (Attention Span, 2023) revealed that our average screen attention span has plummeted:
2004: Average screen attention span was 2.5 minutes.
Today: Average screen attention span is roughly 47 seconds.
Furthermore, their research found that after a single interruption, it takes an average of 25 minutes to fully regain deep focus. When our days are fractured by constant pings and notifications, our nervous system remains in a perpetual state of low-grade alert.
